On February 2nd, the Syracuse Orange women’s club hockey team hosted Springfield College at Tennity Ice Pavilion in a thrilling and physical matchup, emerging victorious with a 4-2 win. This game followed a commanding 6-1 win over Springfield back in November in Massachusetts, but Saturday’s showdown proved to be far more intense and closely contested.
The game kicked off with plenty of energy, and it didn’t take long for Syracuse to make its mark. The Orange drew first blood on a power-play goal from Ivy Dietrich, who was set up beautifully by Bry Treon. The 1-0 lead in the first period was a sign of things to come, as the game quickly ramped up in physicality, with both teams trading penalties and scoring chances.
The second period began with a strong offensive push from Syracuse, resulting in a well-executed goal from Leah Landry, who was assisted by Eden Price. Landry’s goal doubled the lead to 2-0 and gave the Orange a commanding edge. However, as the period wound down, Springfield responded with a late tally at 18:20, cutting the lead to 2-1 and keeping the game within reach.
Springfield came out in the third period with renewed energy and capitalized early on, tying the game 2-2. Despite the momentum swing, Syracuse refused to back down, with Ivy Dietrich once again emerging as the hero. Dietrich’s second goal of the game, assisted by Landry, put Syracuse back in front, 3-2. It was the decisive strike, giving the Orange the edge they needed to finish strong.
As the clock wound down, Syracuse sealed the deal with an insurance goal from Hannah O’Dowd, who scored with 11 minutes left in the period, with the assist going to Elise Herrick. That goal put the Orange up 4-2 and ensured that the win would be theirs.
The game was a physical affair, with both teams racking up penalties throughout the contest. In total, there were 24 penalty minutes—13 for Springfield and 11 for Syracuse—but neither team allowed the special teams play to disrupt their focus.
In net, Syracuse’s Harper Keenan was stellar, stopping 19 of the 21 shots they faced to secure the win. Their composure and skill between the pipes were critical in keeping Springfield at bay.
With the victory, Syracuse now turns its attention to its next game against Cornell on Saturday, February 8th, at 2 PM. This game will also be the Women in Sports Game, an exciting event celebrating female athletes. Fans can expect giveaways, raffles, and more!
Don’t miss out on the chance to support your team and celebrate women in sports! Be there this Saturday at Tennity Ice Pavilion.
Final Score: Syracuse 4, Springfield 2
