Syracuse Dominates in Women's Sports Game Against Cornell with a 13-0 Victory

On February 8, 2025, the Tennity Ice Pavilion was packed with energy and excitement as Syracuse University’s women’s club hockey team took on Cornell University in a highly anticipated matchup. The 2:00 p.m. game not only showcased intense athleticism but also celebrated women in sports, with a special ceremonial puck drop to kick off the festivities.

The puck drop featured two prominent figures from Syracuse University’s athletic programs: Emma Russell, Assistant Coach of Syracuse D1 Field Hockey and a former NCAA Division I National Champion, and Gabriella Matautia, Assistant Coach of Syracuse D1 Women’s Volleyball. In addition, the beloved Syracuse mascot, Otto the Orange, made a fun appearance, energizing the crowd as the game began.

Syracuse put on a show, dominating the ice with a commanding 13-0 victory over Cornell. The Orange fired an impressive 40 shots on goal, compared to just 15 for the Big Red. Goaltenders Harper Keenan and Emma Lacz shared the net for Syracuse, with both registering a combined shutout in the win.


Syracuse’s Explosive Scoring

Syracuse’s offense was unstoppable from the start. The first period saw a flurry of goals, beginning with Ivy Dietrich’s goal, assisted by Leah Landry. Hannah O’Dowd followed up with another goal, assisted by Julianna Bucci. Landry then added a goal of her own, unassisted, before Amanda Wheeler scored with assists from Sophie Lauzon and O’Dowd. The period wrapped up with Elise Herrick’s goal, assisted by Neve Padulo and Dietrich.

The second period was just as dominant. Leigh Wilkin extended the lead with an assist from Gia Becchi and Herrick, followed by Eden Price’s goal, assisted by Bucci. Padulo found the back of the net, assisted by Dietrich, before Price struck again, this time assisted by Wilkin. Dietrich added her own goal, assisted by Landry and Padulo, while Bry Treon completed the period’s scoring with an unassisted goal.

In the final period, Bucci scored with an assist from Wheeler, and Wheeler followed up with another goal, assisted by Dietrich and Sophia Znamierowski.




A Celebration of Women's Sports

The game wasn't just about the score—it was a celebration of women in sports, with a packed crowd cheering on Syracuse. Fans showed their support by making posters, filling the stands with enthusiasm. Throughout the game, there were raffles, giveaways, and plenty of entertainment, including a fun chuck-a-puck contest and a t-shirt toss.

This game highlighted not only Syracuse’s dominant performance but also the growing presence and importance of women in sports. The 13-0 win was an impressive showcase of talent, teamwork, and the spirit of athleticism at Syracuse University.

As the crowd filed out of the Tennity Ice Pavilion, it was clear that the Syracuse women’s club hockey team has a bright future ahead. With strong leadership and a powerhouse performance, they’ve proven that they are a force to be reckoned with in the world of women’s sports.
